چکیده

A simple model using upper-air meteorological variables in the NCEP-NCAR Reanalysis database is used to model seasonal components of mass balance of three glaciers in Svalbard. The model was originally developed for glaciers in North America, and has been applied to glaciers in Norway, Sweden and Iceland. Over the period for which mass balance data are available for the three Svalbard glaciers, the model fit yields r 2 values ranging from 0.46 to 0.61 for winter balance B w and from 0.56 to 0.59 for summer balance B s . Sensitivity to + 1 ° C warming was about − 0.36 m yr − 1 water equivalent (w.eq.), caused mainly by increased ablation and secondarily by shift of precipitation from snow to rain. Sensitivity to a 10% increase in precipitation was about + 0.06 m yr − 1 w.eq. The model, calibrated over the period of observations, was used to extend the mass balance series back to 1948. At annual resolution, observed mass balance of the three glaciers correlates poorly with both the North Atlantic Oscillation (NAO) and with glaciers in Norway. Over two multiyear periods, the strongly positive NAO period 1990–1996 and the period afterward, glaciers in both Svalbard and especially Norway showed a pronounced decline in B w . However, B s for Svalbard glaciers was not more strongly negative after 1996, in contrast to glaciers in Norway.

Reconstruction of mass balance of glaciers in southern Norway back to 1948

A model using upper-air meteorological variables in the US National Centers for Environmental Prediction and US National Center for Atmospheric Research (NCEP/NCAR) re-analysis database is used to extend net balance bn back to 1948 for seven glaciers in southern Norway. The observational record of another glacier, Storbreen, began in 1948. Over the observational record of each of the seven glac...

Positive mass balance during the late 20th century on Austfonna, Svalbard, revealed using satellite radar interferometry

Determining whether increasing temperature or precipitation will dominate the cryospheric response to climate change is key to forecasting future sea-level rise. The volume of ice contained in the ice caps and glaciers of the Arctic archipelago of Svalbard is small compared with that of the Greenland or Antarctic ice sheets, but is likely to be affected much more rapidly in the short term by cl...

Estimating the long-term calving flux of Kronebreen, Svalbard, from geodetic elevation changes and mass-balance modelling

This study independently quantifies geodetic elevation change and models surface mass balance to solve the continuity equation. The approach is tested on two dynamically different glaciers, Kongsvegen and Kronebreen in northwest Svalbard, through two time epochs, 1966–1990/95 (I) and 1990/95–2007 (II). On Kongsvegen, a dynamically inactive glacier, the residual term represents an error associat...

Adjustment of regional climate model output for modeling the climatic mass balance of all glaciers on Svalbard

Large-scale modeling of glacier mass balance relies often on the output from regional climate models (RCMs). However, the limited accuracy and spatial resolution of RCM output pose limitations on mass balance simulations at subregional or local scales. Moreover, RCM output is still rarely available over larger regions or for longer time periods. This study evaluates the extent to which it is po...

Future climate and surface mass balance of Svalbard glaciers in an RCP8.5 climate scenario: a study with the regional climate model MAR forced by MIROC5

We have performed a future projection of the climate and surface mass balance (SMB) of Svalbard with the MAR (Modèle Atmosphérique Régional) regional climate model forced by MIROC5 (Model for Interdisciplinary Research on Climate), following the RCP8.5 scenario at a spatial resolution of 10 km. MAR predicts a similar evolution of increasing surface melt everywhere in Svalbard followed by a sudd...
